NATO spokesman Roland Lavoie has no clue when he is talking about the Libyan war. "Basically they have opted to choose to inflict pain on the rest of the population in Libya. From that perspective it just does not make sense to see what these few remaining forces are doing," he stated today, discussing the protracted defense of Sirte by Gaddafi loyalists. Well, it makes perfect sense - it is a tribal war of survival, in which one tribe is trying to exterminate another. It makes perfect sense to fight. It also makes perfect sense from the point of view of military honor. The Sirte defenders are very much like the Brest Fortress defenders in Russia in 1941 (or Masada defenders in 70 A.D..) It also did make sense to fight - the German troops advanced deep into Russia already, but the Brest Fortress keep on fighting, even though it was hopeless. They saved the honor of the Red Army. The same went for the Jews who prefered to commit suicide rather than to surrender to the Romans. Lavoie also misplaced the blame on Sirte defenders who "choose to inflict pain on the rest of the population in Libya". Population of Sirte backs Gaddafi, it is rather NATO and the NATO-backed armed gangs that inflict pain on Libyan population.
